Professional Staff

Steve W. Breeding, Laboratory Director

Dr. Breeding, a native of Conway, Arkansas, has B.S. degrees in animal science and poultry science, a master's degree in poultry science/physiology and a doctorate in veterinary medicine, all from North Carolina State University. He is also a diplomate in the American College of Poultry Veterinarians, has received USDA training in the recognition and diagnosis of foreign animal diseases, and has direct experience working with a foreign animal disease outbreak. Dr. Breeding has been the Director of the diagnostic laboratory in Northwest Arkansas since 1997 and is an adjunct faculty member in both Animal Science and Poultry Science Departments at the University of Arkansas.

Technical Staff

Alicia White, Program Associate, Assistant Lab Manager

Alicia White, a native of Rogers, Arkansas, has a B.A. degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Hendrix College, in Conway, Arkansas. Alicia has been with the diagnostic laboratory in Northwest Arkansas since 1998. Alicia has extensive experience in all aspects of the laboratory and has worked her way up through the ranks to Assistant Laboratory Manager. Alicia supervises testing in the serology, microbiology and PCR laboratories, and assists with necropsy examinations. Alicia is USDA-NVSL certified for Equine Infectious Anemia testing and USDA-NPIP certified for Avian Influenza and Avian Mycoplasma testing.

Amy Chapman, Program Technician

Amy Chapman, a native of Mount Ida, Arkansas, has a B.S. degree in Biology from Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Amy started as a part-time laboratory assistant in 2007 and in 2008 became a full-time laboratory technician. Amy is cross trained and works in serology, microbiology and PCR laboratories and is USDA-NPIP certified for Salmonella testing.

LaTasha Gray, Program Technician

LaTasha Gray, a native of Fayetteville, Arkansas, has a B.S. degree in Biology from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas.  LaTasha is the most recent addition to the team and is being cross trained in the serology and microbiology laboratories.  LaTasha is USDA-NPIP certified for Avian Influenza testing. 

Support Staff

Joyce Nelson, Administrative Specialist II

Joyce Nelson, a native of Fayetteville, Arkansas has recently joined the VDL team. Joyce performs administrative duties and provides friendly courteous assistance to the laboratory clientele during case submissions and when clients call the laboratory requesting information.

Dale Kirby, Agriculture Technician

Dale Kirby, a native of Fayetteville, Arkansas, has five years experience working with the University of Arkansas System and has been with VDL since 2008. Dale maintains the professional appearance of the laboratory facilities and laboratory landscaping.
